Satellite geodesy
Satellite geodesy is geodesy by means of artificial satellites—the measurement of the form and dimensions of Earth, the location of objects on its surface and the figure of the Earth's gravity field by means of artificial satellite techniques. It belongs to the broader field of space geodesy.

A satellite is a subviral agent that depends on the coinfection of a host cell with a helper virus for its replication. Satellites can be divided into two major classes: satellite viruses and satellite nucleic acids.

Traditional astronomical geodesy is not commonly considered a part of satellite geodesy, although there is considerable overlap between the techniques.: 2

The main goals of satellite geodesy are:

  1. Determination of the figure of the Earth, positioning, and navigation (geometric satellite geodesy): 3
  2. Determination of geoid, Earth's gravity field and its temporal variations (dynamical satellite geodesy or satellite physical geodesy)
  3. Measurement of geodynamical phenomena, such as crustal dynamics and polar motion: 4 : 1

Satellite geodetic data and methods can be applied to diverse fields such as navigation, hydrography, oceanography and geophysics. Satellite geodesy relies heavily on orbital mechanics.

2. Four years ago, according to Laury Miller, chief of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration‘s satellite altimetry laboratory, experts could provide only a range of estimates for how much sea level has increased over the past century.
3. The satellite altimetry (height measuring) method now used to measure height in ocean waves generally cannot provide data when the sea surface is calm, or "slick," because of oil spills, phytoplankton blooms or lack of wind.
